 "Now That's a Good Cup o' Joe!" 2010-06-12
By neurosurgerytech (MA United States)
Admit it, how many drip coffee machines have you purchased in your lifetime? Too many I'm sure, just like me. The carafe breaks, can't find the right style replacement, or it just stops working after a few years.

I am DONE with shoddy electric appliances. I did a little online searching, and I decided that a stainless steel percolator was the right choice:

* No glass carafe to break, no electrical components to wear out, and I can use it even if the power is out (gas stove or outside on campfire).

*all stainless steel parts, sturdy, easy to clean

*basket has a cover (not all percolator baskets do)

* dome is made from Lexan resin, which is BPA-free and resistant to breaking (unlike percolators with glass domes, and I have read some reviews that complain of frequent cracking)

* does not require filter papers

* doesn't hog up counter space in my tiny galley kitchen

* makes a REALLY GOOD cup of coffee!

I admit there was a learning curve when it came to learning how to brew coffee with a percolator, but it made me realize that making truly good coffee is a lost art form that needs to be reclaimed. My first pot I turned the stove on high and boiled the crap out of it -- yuck! After doing a little online browsing, I learned that you need to keep it more at a simmer. Once the coffee starts to perk (you'll see it splashing in the dome), turn the heat down a bit and let it perk for no more than 5 minutes. Mmmmm . . . .

I am never going back to drip brew, and I have purchased my last coffee maker. I am going to have this percolator with me until the end!

"Perfect coffee the first time" 2010-05-22
By Biondina (Valley Springs, CA)
I gave it a test run with so-so coffee and it still produced a good cup of coffee. When I made a full pot with Starbuck's Pike's Place coffee, it was delicious, even an hour after it was brewed. The last cup, later on, was still delicious. The pot's easy to clean. It's lightweight so even filled it's easy to move. The only drawback is a short cord - good for safety, but inconvenient if you don't plan the location for it with that in mind. Very good value.

This coffee urn is one of the best. We have coffee all the time in Iraq and it always tastes fresh even after 12 hours of being on. I love this product and would recommend it to anyone needing lots of coffee and something dependable.

 "Good product, great price" 2010-05-05
By Sam Behnam (San Diego, CA)
I bought this product for my catering business and used it twice a day every day for a whole week. It worked fine, and even got compliments about the quality of the coffee. Just be aware that you can't plug two of these machines on the same plug. Also the power cords are not too long, so bring have some extension cords available for use. Obviously, it's not the best looking product out there, but it's presentable.

 "A GOOD PERK...." 2010-05-01
By Buckshot Jones (Spruce Pine, AL USA)
for the money. I really wanted a Regalware because of the stainless steel. The West Bend 58002 is made by Regalware but it is made of Aluminum and about 1/2 price. Short safe cord. Easy to clean. Spout Locks for continious pouring or bends back for single pour. Light comes on when coffee is perked. 2 & 1/2 cups of Percolator Grind Bean makes a nice 42 cups of coffee, but I use just a little more bean. Does not use a filter! Coffee comes out HOT and stays HOT as long as you leave the Urn pluged up. I like it better than I thought I would. I might have paid a couple dollars more by using Amazon but Amazon is one of the best and safest retailers on the 'net.

Amazon.com Review

Made from luxurious stainless steel. Makes 4 to 12 cups of rich, flavorful coffee automatically; a cup a minute. Signal light tells when coffee is ready to serve. Attractive, traditional styling - ideal for table service.
One of the most comforting sounds in the world is the bubbling of a coffee percolator at work. And then comes the toasty aroma--it makes for a perfect morning. Percolators have come back to home kitchens, and the Presto 12-cup stainless steel coffee maker is a prime example. Its elegant, hotel-style design brings a touch of luxury to what is for many a daily pleasure.

This coffee maker brews up to twelve cups of coffee at a cup-a-minute rate, which it then keeps at a constant, piping-hot serving temperature. An indicator light in the base announces when the coffee is ready. The inner fixtures--the filter basket and perk tube--are also made of stainless steel, rather than the more common (and less durable) aluminum. The power cord is removable to make storage simple.

Before cleaning the coffee maker, unplug the unit and allow it to cool completely. Wash the coffee maker with warm, sudsy water and dry it thoroughly; it is not immersible. To preserve the gloss of the stainless steel, do not use steel wool or harsh, abrasive cleansers. The perk spout and filter basket can be cleaned with a brush or pipe cleaner. If necessary, coffee stain remover can be used periodically on the interior surface. The coffee maker measures 10 by 5 by 13 inches (including handle, lid, and spout). Presto guarantees this product with a one-year limited warranty. A simple instruction sheet is enclosed. --Garland Withers

 "Glad I took a chance!" 2010-09-02
By Mark Drajem
As most previous reviewers have said, this percolator brews very hot, delicious coffee. I had a Cuisinart grind n' brew and grew tired of the time it took to clean the darn thing because I always like to start every morning with a good, fresh cup o' joe.

Not having ever brewed with a percolator, but having fond memories of my mother doing it, I decided to take a chance on the Presto because of all the positive reviews. I wasn't disappointed. I was a little wary that there was no automatic shut-off for the coffee pot because I tend to be a little forgetful and thought I might burn it out if I left for work and forgot to unplug it. I solved that dilemna by purchasing an automatic shut-of timer and used the 2 hour setting.

I also read a few reviews that mentioned using a paper filter to keep the grounds that percolate out of the basket to a minimum. I tried doing that and found that using a filter actually caused more to leave the basket. I'm guessing that the design engineers took it all into account when they designed it. There are very few grounds in the coffee pot just using the basket that came with the pot. The smell that permeates the kitchen in the morning is awesome!

"product is OK, not thilled with service though" 2010-08-24
By LL (Northern New Jersey)
i received this as a christmas gift last year. While the coffee it makes is pretty darn good, it's been under a year and the screws that hold the thing together are completely rusted over. i'm also not 100% sure there isn't any rust inside. it's certainly discolored, as coffee can do, but because there is rust on the outside for sure, how do I know it's not on the inside as well? a friend of mine has had her percolator for probably 20 years and there is not a spot of rust on the darn thing! So, the thing is covered under warranty for a year. Great for me? sort of. I have to mail it back, on my dime, to someplace in Mississippi, and then wait for them to send me a new one. How long will this take? who knows? and THAT is why it gets 3 stars. Hopefully people reading my review will take into consideration the entire process, not just the specific product. in my opinion, that is part of the whole experience. If it makes great coffee, what is the point if it's just going to rust and you can't use it for months on end anyway?

btw, customer service at least answered the phone and gave me the necessary info. but big deal! they should have service centers or at least allow me to bring it back or have Amazon replace it for me in a more timely manner.

 "best coffee ever" 2010-08-24
By Sunshine (Iowa)
I inherited my first Presto, bought by my aunt in 2003 for $49.99. She kept the receipt and she used this percolator at least once every single day. I received it in 2006 and used it daily until finally the cord started to get iffy. So I found it here on Amazon and gladly paid the asking price to buy another. And, after receiving it I called Presto direct and found they have replacement cords at a very reasonable price. So now I have a back up! I expect another 7 or so years from this Presto as well. There is nothing like percolated coffee, it is absolutely the best and Presto has fabulous customer service. Thanks Amazon, another deal delivered to my door!

"Great coffee, always hot, nice looking" 2010-08-22
By wfltwd
I bought this because I remembered how great my grandmother's coffee was from her percolator and I was tired of the weak, lukewarm coffee from most drip machines. Selected this one because of the reviews and the price and it turned out to be a GREAT choice. The unit is solid, well made, and attractive as a bonus. If you aren't familiar with using a percolator it does take some getting used to, especially if you don't want a cup full of grounds, but in the long run it's well worth it for a perfect cup of coffee. A few things of special note:

* This makes about a cup a minute and you can't interrupt the brew cycle to pour your first cup.

* Unit gets VERY hot on the outside, be careful and keep it away from the counter edges with kids.

* I set mine on a hot plate to protect the counter from excess heat since I drink coffee all day.

* Unit will reheat coffee to a nice hot temp, just make sure to remove the brewing components.

* Paper filters for these are not good, too many grounds escape into the liquid. Buy the 1 year filter and save yourself the

headaches.

* No timer to start brewing, easily fixed with a wall timer (about $4)

All in all, I'm very pleased with this product and have had several friends who have ordered one after seeing mine.

 "excellent product" 2010-08-17
By Annette Walker (CENTRALIA, IL, US)
the coffee maker is just as described and makes excellent coffee! I had forgotten the deep flavor of percolated coffee!

The only recommendation I have is that the knob on the lid should be clear glass so that one could see the coffee perking.
